Fitness Q&A with G42's John Clarke

The third participant in our Personal Trainer Q&A series is John Clarke. John is a fully qualified personal trainer and nutritionist, owning the G42 studios gym in Garston, Liverpool.  G42 sees a variety of clientele signing up to their personal trainer schemes, venturing from the average worker to a number of professional boxers and footballers. In his spare time, John trains as a fitness model competitor, winning numerous titles and is the host of The Fixated by Fitness Podcast.

What is your favourite exercise?
The lat pull down is my favourite exercise, works towards building the V shape on your abs!

What muscle do you consider to be the most important to be trained on?
For me the brain is the most important muscle, healthy mind is the most important thing you need. Everything else needs to be trained equally so there’s no imbalance.

What is your favourite pre workout meal / snack?
I usually have protein porridge for a pre workout meal, it’s a good blend of complex carbs and protein

What is your favourite post workout meal / snack?
Greek food definitely, I love the chicken kebabs with rice and salad

What is your favourite MFB dish?
The Turkish Meatloaf for me or maybe the beef teriyaki, both sublime dishes, can’t really decide.

What is your favourite cheat dish?
Lasagne is my favourite cheat

How many times a week do you train?
I usually train 6 times a week but if my bodies sore I’ll drop it down to 5, no less than 5 though.

How do you deal with sugar / junk food cravings?
I have junk sugar most days... but account for it in my calories. 80% good 20% “bad”!

What is the best diet to follow for losing weight?
There is no perfect diet, the diet you can stick to is the best. Active lifestyle partnered with eating clean is important , but ultimately you must be in a calorie defect though!

What and when should I eat around my workouts?
I try to eat an hour before training and try to have protein no later than 60 mins after training, whether that’s a snack or a high protein filled meal varies.
