A Simple Explanation To A Calorie Deficit

One of the most common questions we’ve been asked is what’s the best way and best diet to lose weight. And ultimately, there is no one, definite answer. Some people will find that one diet will help them shed the pounds, whereas another individual will find a completely different concept helps them lose the excess weight.

After speaking to a number of Personal Trainers (which can be seen within our PT Q&A series which can be found in our Blog page), and also nutritionists, is that there is only one way to be guaranteed to lose weight.

And this, of course, is the famous two words, known as a calorie deficit. A calorie deficit is simply any shortage in the amount of calories consumed relative to the amount of calories required for maintenance of current body weight (energy homeostasis). A deficit can be created by reducing input/calories consumed (lower food intake, aka dieting), or increasing exercise.

To simplify this, if you’re wanting to lose weight, ensure that you are consuming less than you’re burning. This is done by either increasing the amount you’re exercising, or reducing the amount of calories you’re consuming.
